The Importance of Parental Involvement In Schools

Survey after survey shows that administrators, teachers, and even parents agree…lack of parental involvement at home and school is the biggest challenge facing schools. Parents and educators also list poor student behavior among their top four major concerns, because it results in:

  • Disrupted classrooms.
  • Lost curriculum time.
  • Lost homework time.
  • Poor learning environment.
  • Loss of good teachers.

Over 50 years of long-term research shows when parents are involved with their children at home and school, using proven-effective parenting methods, their children are far more likely to arrive at school fed, rested, ready to learn, emotionally stable, able to focus, and capable of achieving higher standards. When parents and educators work together to model and use these effective behavior management strategies, children develop life skills such as independent problem solving, responsible decision making, and self-discipline.

“When schools collaborate with parents to help their children learn, and when parents participate in school activities and decision-making about their children’s education, children achieve at higher levels . . . when parents are involved in education, children do better in school and schools improve.”
— U.S. Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education

The School Toolshop® outcome-focused programs equip parents and educators with the tools they need to improve:

  • Parent involvement at home and school
  • Parent effectiveness at home
  • Parent-Teacher communication
  • Classroom behavior management
  • Student behavior in the classroom and at home
  • Student social-emotional skills
  • Student ability to concentrate and learn the content

When parents are involved, students do better!

Numerous studies have found that students with involved parents, regardless of income or background, are more likely to:

  • Earn high grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs
  • Pass their classes, earn credits, and be promoted
  • Attend school regularly
  • Graduate and go on to post-secondary education

The Parent’s and Teacher’s Toolshop® overview

The School Toolshop® programs are fun, flexible and engaging.  They feature interactive activities, practical techniques, down-to-earth real-world examples, and resources.

Parents and teachers are empowered to think for themselves and walk away feeling confident and motivated to put what they learn into action.

The School Toolshop® is based on the research and techniques presented in the award-winning book, The Parent’s Toolshop, by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE.  Jody is a nationally-recognized parenting expert who has trained over 5000 parents, teachers and family professionals to become more effective in working with children.

The Parent’s Toolshop® is unique and is different from every other parenting resource because it teaches a reliable decision-making formula that involves asking three questions to determine which of  five problem types a situation fits. That answer leads to the steps that parents and teachers will take to follow through with an effective response that handles the problem in a way that helps students be successful without nagging, bribes or belittling.

Use this reliable decision-making formula to find an effective response to any problem or situation any time with any child anywhere.

Plus, the content itself is:

  • Comprehensive, offering 100+ language and action tools.
  • Accurate, instead of fostering myths or misinformation.
  • Universally useful by both parents and teachers.
  • Practical, not just philosophical.
  • Positive, telling you what to do.
  • Effective, producing positive long-term results

Here is what administrators and school staff say about
The School Toolshop®

“I can’t thank you enough for the quality programming that you provided our parents.  It was very evident, during the evening workshop that our parents were engaged in the discussions and activities.  Their smiles and laughter showed their comfort level and enjoyment.  From the results of the evaluations that the parents completed following the event, parents scored The Parents Toolshop® presentation very highly in overall impression, activities, discussions, preparation and topic expertise.  That’s quite an accomplishment, especially coming from parents who have put in a full day’s work then attended an evening program.”                               — Paul Schneider, State & Federal Programs for Springfield City Schools

“I will recommend your presentation to other schools in our district.
It is very appropriate for teachers and other school staff members
interested in helping students develop positive self images.”
—Beth Shoaf, Principal, Buckeye Woods Elementary, South Western
City Schools,Grove City, OH

““I would advise anyone who is a parent or who works with children to consider attending Toolshop® presentations. The advice is
simple, yet specific and is presented in a very nonjudgmental, accepting way. As parents, teachers, and counselors, we need to know as many “tools of the trade” as we can. There’s so much at stake.”
—Teresa D. Miller, M.S. Ed., High School Guidance Counselor
